Back in July 2021, YouTube introduced Super Thanks, a feature that allowed users to tip creators who were a part of a private beta testing phase. The monetization feature has now been extended to all eligible creators across 68 countries, allowing most YouTube creators to monetize their content in a new way.
Isn’t this the same as Super Chats, you ask? Well, no, not really. With Super Chats, users can pay their favorite creators during a live stream. But with Super Thanks, fans are able to tip their favorite channels for any video, not just live streams. Of course, the creator still has to be a YouTube Partner and have monetization enabled to enjoy the perks of the Super Thanks feature.
Super Thanks Expanded
The new monetization tool allows viewers to purchase Super Tanks at four price points, starting at $2 up to $50 if they wish to show support for their favorite channels and content. Fans who send a Super Thanks to a creator of their choice will see an animated GIF on the video (each price point has its own special animation) as well as their comment which can, of course, be personalized.
Huge fan of that sourdough bread recipe? Tip the channel. Found that bike repair video useful? Monetarily thank the creator. You get the gist. But how can you tell if your favorite YouTuber is accepting Super Thanks? It’s pretty intuitive– if they’re eligible and have enabled monetization, you’ll see the option below the title and beside the thumbs up, down, and share buttons. The option simply says “Thanks” and shows a little heart with a dollar sign inside. Hey, artists have to eat, too, you know!
Who’s Eligible?
So, as we mentioned, a channel has to be monetized to be eligible for Super Thanks. Aside from that, the creator must be in one of the 68 locations worldwide (these include the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, most of Europe, Brazil, Japan, South Africa, and many more). The channel must also not be a music channel under SRAV.
As for individual videos, YouTube writes that Super Thanks won’t be available for the following types of content:
- Age-restricted
- Private
- Unlisted
- Made for kids
- With Content ID claims
- Videos with YouTube Giving fundraisers
- Live streams and premiers while they’re live
The Super Thanks feature will be available on both mobile and desktop devices.
