Sonos has just revealed its first speaker of 2022 and surprisingly, it is a bit cheaper than its predecessor. The reason? The new model is not a smart speaker: it is an old-school outdoor speaker that comes without Alexa. The audacity!
Portable and lightweight, Sonos Roam SL is a handy little gadget to take with you pretty much anywhere you go. It is shock-absorbent, waterproof, and dustproof so you can bring it with you when hiking, biking, camping, or on any other outdoor adventure without worrying about damaging it. A real relief for any adrenaline junkie!
Sonos Roam SL Specifications
- IP67 waterproof
- 10+ hour battery life
- Two class-H digital amplifiers
- CPU Quad Core 1.4 GHz A-53
- USB-C Port 15W, 5V/3A
- Weight 0.95 lb (0.43 kg)
The new Sonos speaker is a device that blends seamlessly into any space. It is compact and highly portable and the clever design allows it to be placed both horizontally or upright. The sound adjusts to the orientation, which is a nice touch but also something we have already seen on their previous model. The in-built 18Wh rechargeable battery provides up to 10 hours of continuous playback at moderate volumes. It also delivers sound clarity and depth you wouldn’t expect from such a tiny device.
The SL does come with a caveat: this speaker doesn’t have a built-in microphone so it cannot work as a smart speaker and so it does not support Alexa or Google Assistant. It’s pretty old-school. This means it also doesn’t support Automatic Trueplay, Sonos’s software that allows the speaker to intuitively adjust its EQ settings depending on where it’s placed, and Sound Swap, a feature that allows you to transfer music from your Roam to the closest Sonos speaker while keeping the music playing. You can still use the Sonos app to adjust bass, treble, and loudness though.
The Buy
The new model comes in two classic colors with a matte finish: Shadow Black and Lunar White. It is available to preorder at a price of $159 — making it $20 cheaper than the Roam, meaning it is one of the most affordable speakers from Sonos.
