Kalea – An Indoor Composter for the Hesitant Hugger
If you’re anything like me, you’ve wanted to compost but don’t have the yard space for a compost pile, or already get fruit flies and don’t need a reason for more. Like many of you, I have a green thumb, want to help the environment, and desire nutritious compost to help my plant babies, but composting seemed far away. Kitchen gadgets seemed useless against the life and science of composting. Then I read about Kalea, the indoor composter.
Kalea is a discreet, indoor composter and app-connected smart kitchen gadget that breaks down organic compost in 48 hours. The whole process is indoors, and no more food scraps to attract fruit flies. The limitations around composting no longer exist.
Inside Kalea
What happens to compost after leaving your kitchen and joining the compost pile is lengthy and plenty scientific. The team behind Kalea has studied and prototyped this process: not only the scientific method but the actual act of composting in your home and what obstacles stand in the way of more composting households. And then they designed an easy-to-operate, kitchen-friendly indoor composter and a Kalea App for expert advice, helpful tips, and updates on your own compost!
From the top-down, the Kalea has an organic scrap container for kitchen waste, a separate shredding and drying chamber, then a composting chamber, and a removable tray for the garden-ready compost. There is an 85%-volume reduction from start to finish. Kalea recycles the composting byproduct (heat) in the drying chamber to save energy and dehumidify the exhaust air. Water is not required for operation but is an occasional byproduct. Keep this water and water your plants; it’s nutrient-heavy from the composting process.
And, for the cherry-on-top, Kalea has an activated carbon filter. Composting hold-outs are no longer associated with fruit flies and foul odors with indoor composting.
The Difference
Other food composters don’t allow you to fill the food chamber while the unit is running. With Kalea indoor composter, you won’t have to wait, and the compost product will provide nutritious value to your plants and garden.
After shredding and drying scraps in the first chamber, Kalea’s second chamber controls aeration, temperature, and humidity with sensors and an intelligent control system, activating natural compounds and organisms to accelerate metabolism and supporting natural decomposition in only 48 hours! Other composters just shred and dry, offering no nutritional value to your garden, potentially threatening the lives of your plants instead.
Bring Kalea Home
Fulfill your composting dreams by pledging to Kalea’s Kickstarter and save yourself some dough in the long haul. A pledge of $655 or more will save you $417 on the $1,072 MSRP. With each pledge, Kalea buys 3 square meters of bogland. Why? Because this special ecological space traps 30% of the Earth’s CO2 while occupying only 3% of Earth’s surface.
Be sure to read the fine print, though — Kalea ships only to certain countries and ships in December of 2021.
With methane gas — released during the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter — being 20% more dangerous than CO2 and an indoor composter as convenient as Kalea, there’s no reason to delay. Even though Kalea won’t ship until next year, don’t let it stop you from getting started on your composting journey. Get started on garden planters for next year, or try out your green thumb to start composting in your urban environment. Kalea will be home soon enough to assist you in the kitchen and the garden.
