Govee Smart Hygrometer: Humidity Monitor That Saved Gear
Hygrometers are powerful tools for measuring humidity; they can detect water leaks and damage or keep you aware of your home’s comfort level. Hygrometers can also monitor storage conditions of precious or collectible items like cigars or wine. The Govee Smart Hygrometer is a Bluetooth hygrometer that can handle any of the tasks mentioned above and more with a low margin of error — +/- .54 degrees Fahrenheit and +/-3 % relative humidity. The Govee Smart Hygrometer ended up saving thousands of dollars in outdoor gear while testing. Let’s dig in.
The Basics
The Govee Smart Hygrometer lacks a screen, which may be its only downside, but its functionality is exceptional compared to other hygrometers. You can place this 1.56-inch square block anywhere, either by setting it down in the area you wish to monitor or by hanging it from the small hanging hole in the corner. Additionally, you will need to download the Govee Home app and connect your device to complete the setup process. Taking the product out of the box to full operation took about 5 minutes.
Saving Gear: The Review
Shortly after this product arrived, my roommate pulled a tent out of our crawl space turned storage area that smelled like mildew. Immediately, we knew where to put the device. I set the ThermPro TP50 Digital Hygrometer in my living room as a baseline for the rest of the home, set Govee in the storage area, and closed the door. After about an hour, I used the smartphone app to check the gear storage area’s humidity level. The humidity level was above 80%, and the temperature was 40 degrees.
The 328-foot connectivity range means I can check Govee anywhere in my home or even the backyard. Upon seeing these numbers, we took all the gear out and completed thorough checks of our skiing, climbing, camping, and mountaineering gear. Thankfully, the tent was the only casualty. My roommate went ahead and made some fixes to our makeshift gear storage space, and we put all the gear back, Govee included, to make sure our adjustments worked.
Once I put Govee back, I set an alert via the easy-to-use smartphone app so that if the humidity were above 60%, I would know right away. The helpful charts and graphs inside the app allowed me to watch the humidity decline and if it should rise again. I’ll hopefully be able to have some clues as to why. In the app, you get 20 days of onboard storage to export to excel for long-term tracking.
