Airstream’s iconic RVs have been synonymous with comfortable travel ever since they first hit the market in the 1930s. We have all seen them: attractive design, quality construction, lots of safety features—pretty much everything even the most demanding RV enthusiast could ask for. However, times are changing and the travel culture has no option but to evolve.
Recognizing that a major industry transition is underway, Airstream – the company long-dedicated to RV innovation – has partnered with THOR Industries to create a sustainable recreational vehicle for eco-conscious adventurers. While still a concept, the electric RV promises to deliver a superior travel experience that takes advantage of the latest technologies, including smart home tech that enhances comfort, digital tools that help plan the journey, and electric mobility systems that allow more freedom. The overall idea is to minimize energy consumption and enhance the user experience.
Estream: RV Reimagined
The growing demand for all-electric travel alternatives has paved the way for this global RV innovation. The idea is to reinvent the classic RV to suit the next generation’s needs and preferences and face the challenges of a changing world. This first-of-its-kind concept promises to deliver a better overall travel experience: meaning safety and comfort paired with all the advantages of electrification, aerodynamics, and modern technology.
We are happy to see Airstream has kept its signature aesthetics: the unpainted aluminum alloy sheets and rivets are a nice nod to the classic. But that’s it when it comes to the traditional design; the electric concept RV is now powered by a high-vol battery pack and an integrated fuel cell and has a range of up to 300 miles. The electric drivetrain powers the wheels, significantly reducing the tow vehicle energy consumption. eStream also enables remote control, removing the stress of hitching up and backing up – a great relief to everyone who has ever done it. Furthermore, THOR’s digital tools let you see how long before the next charge and help you locate charging stations, making planning, driving, and camping a lot easier. Adventure electrified, indeed.
While we’re super-excited about the possibility of having all-electric, sustainable off-grid adventures in the near future, it’s important to remember that this is still a concept.
