Once the exclusive realm of the strongman athlete, odd-object training, which eschews barbells and dumbbells for more uneven and unstable weights like cement balls and sandbags, is coming more into the mainstream. Case in point, the 5.11 Tactical PT-R Weight Kits. The company, known for its tactical-inspired gear and apparel, is expanding into the fitness realm with its PT-R (Performance Training Readiness) line, and these sandbags are the first entry in the new line.
The Basics of the 5.11 Tactical PT-R Weight Kit
Each kit contains two heavy-duty liner bags that you can fill with sand, rubber pellets, or other weighted materials. Those bags can be used individually as stand-alone weights or placed together into a larger PT-R bag for heavier work.
The liner bags feature roll-top architecture to prevent any spillage, and the PT-R bag has a single side opening with a protected zipper. The PT-R bag also sports heavy-duty handles on the sides, top, and ends of the bag for a wide range of grip options.
The individual liner bags also utilize heavy-duty handles that make them ideal for replacing kettlebells and dumbbells. Placing them in the PT-R bag allows you to work with heavier weight and mimic barbell free weight movements like the clean, overhead press, and the back squat. Or you can sling the bag over your back and crank your next trail run up to 11.
Each bag features 1050D nylon and reinforced, non-slip grip handles to ensure durability through continued use. What’s more, when empty, the bags can be rolled up and stored or packed into luggage with ease, which makes them great for folks who want to work out on the road.
Availability & Pricing
The bags are currently available as a 50-lb set (MSRP $140) or a 100-lb set (MSRP $160) in black or kangaroo (brown).
Obviously, the bags won’t be as rigid as the standard weights that you’re used to, but having a more unsteady object will work more stabilization muscles and better prepare you for real-life applications like hauling giant bags of dog food into a cart or manhandling a heavy carry-on into an overhead compartment.
The 5.11 Tactical PT-R Weight Kits are a great way to get a workout done outside in your backyard or at a park and a refreshing way to take a break from the everyday grind of barbell work.
